There's a relatively new type of slug bait available; it's made from iron
phosphate, is harmless to pets and children, and degrades harmlessly into
the soil. One brand is Sluggo, available here:

(No affiliation, just a happy customer).
Gardens Alive sells a similar product they call Escargo. It's not as
expensive as it seems at first glance, as a little goes a long way. I've
used it for two summers now, and am very happy with how well it works. I
sprinkle a bit around susceptible plants; you need to reapply every two
weeks or after especially heavy rain.
Cheers,

Subject: [SG] Problem with slugs
Hello,
Would appreciate any advice on eliminating slugs from the garden. My flower
beds and even planters are inundated and my plants look just awful. I've
used the beer and diametcious remedies, but they have proved futile. My
hostas, impatients, dahilas are especially hard hit. I have pets..cats and
so have stayed away from any poisons.
Thank you for your advice.
