Fertilizing Astilbes now - or not

Somebody, I think it was Bobby Diehl, mentioned that her astilbes were
in bad shape and attributed that to lack of fertilization.  I know that
astilbes are heavy feeders, but haven't given them all they need.

 Mine look pretty bad too (except the sprites).  Is it too late to feed
them - and should it be Muracid or the straight stuff?
