Re: modern "weaker" Siberians?

Hi Ellen,

My comments were more on growth and performance than survival. Burying
deeper is a handy trick but I don't think it will gaurentee perfomance.

The list of customers with complaints is growing, the most common
exclamation is:

How long before they bloom?

I then ask when did you acquire the plant? More and more are saying after
3-4 years still no bloom.

So obviously my comments are not being applied to anything registered in the
last 4 years or so, although I think the same can be applied.

This has been discussed before on this robin. There are a myriad of factors
which can influence bloom but there is a common thread here. The same plants
are sparse bloomers in our ideal zone 5 growing conditions.

I have listed maybe 100 + cultivars for 3 years now, so I am also growing a
wide range of Siberians.

No offence Ellen, but you are probably an expert at picking great plants
which perform well for you.

Being more of a half empty person I see weakness creeping into Siberians
before positive attributes...

I am sure that some Siberians do wonderful in some locations but doubt
whether all Siberians do well in all locations. If hybridizers are selecting
for performance only in their area before testing in other areas I think
that that is the problem...

Having said all that, someone will probably make me eat my own words some
day.

I think that I will have to really get viscious with some Siberians and
remove them from our listing. It is a hard thing to do though...

Leroy (who has some time due to heavy wet snow since 5:30 this morning)
