Re: novice

Hi Sergey, and Robins,
Jim here, in freezing North Garden, Va., zone 6/7.
Diploids and Tetraploids will seldom cross. For the hybridizer, it is much better to make sure what the ploidy is, and cross only those with the same ploidy.
It is possible to get some dips to cross with some tets. This is usually difficult, and usually done when one parent is an "unreduced gamete cultivar". I can't explain that well, but it has been done. Triploids are very difficult to cross with any plant.
As to Siberians, I have had great success with fertility with dips, and moderate success with Tets. This holds true in many other species of plants, too. I don't know why. Jim

Probably you already had enough time to discuss almost everything about siberians on this forum but maybe somebody won't refuse to answer me too. I'm not a specialist in genetics at all and I heard that crosses between dips and tets are impossible in principle. Is it so? The same question concerning crosses between 28- and 40- chromosome cultivars. I also wonder what classes (groups) SIBs can make crosses with. I heard only about I. setosa and I. versicolor and (maybe) I. pseudacorus.
