Sergey,
Re: crosses of 28- and 40-chromosome siberians: These crosses are
not impossible, just rare. The best known example is Foretell, from
McGarvey. This one is known to have some limited fertility, but supposedly
the offspring are sterile.
If you look at the checklist, and at some books on Iris, you see
record of a lot of crosses between 28 chromosome and 40 chromosome
species. I.e., Sibulleyana, Chrysobirica, mostly from the pre-WW2
period. I've been intrigued by seeing repeated mention of crosses between
I. Sibirica and I. Chrysographes. I'll make some test crosses of these if
I get the chance.
I wouldn't expect too much from these crosses. The flowers may be
attractive, but Foretell is hardly a good grower, and it seems likely that
this is one of the interesting dead ends in the iris world. Still you
never know.
