Hi Chris,
For what its worth, I would only put them in water for a couple of hours
at most, and then put them in a "soil" which is coarser in texture, but
still able to retain water(I use Fison's Sunshine Mix #1). I think on
this last point the roots need more air and they are not able to get it
with the "finer" soiless mixture you mentioned.
Only a couple of days til the first siberian iris opens here.
