Re: definition of minumum acceptable commercial division


I can't give an authoritative answer, but as a gardener/consumer, the
minimum commercial division should be one that is big enough to reasonably
ensure survival, and one that is more or less in keeping with the price
asked. I have gotten divisions from many sources, and the iris specialists
seem pretty consistent in sending single 'connected' divisions of 5 to 9
fans. The whimpiest I ever got was a pale green, leafless, fingertip-sized
single growth clump of half-rotten siberian protoplasm from Spring Hill
nurseries...$5.00. Oddly and ironically enough, that little snippet
established quickly and matured faster than some big divisions from
elsewhere! It was Iris 'Ottawa', which to this day produces close to 250
flowers on a single clump each year.
