Re: SAGE non SA candidates

Bill's comment on the colors in HONEY SCOOP and the suggestion of LANAI is a very good one.  I am mindful that QUITO is one of those mentioned by Mike Sutton as a non- or few-producer of SA's.  The closest I have here is CORDOBA, and I had planned on using it.  As Mike said, most crosses with non-SA's produce at least some SA's.  If the trait(s) is or are recessives, they seem to be especially widespread.

The crosses to the non-producers are important, as this will answer the question of dominance (even partial dominance) over against a recessive origin of the type.

Starting with the simplest hypothesis, the trait is a single gene.  The inheritance is either dominant or recessive.  Crosses to the non-producers in either case will give some "shelved" or "sail-boat" types with that ADVANCE GUARD-like sail at the end of the beard.  The numbers won't be the same, however.  Crossed with an SSSS, if it is either recessive or dominant, (and one gene, no inhibitors present) the highest-SA types will be SSss.  If it is a weak dominant, this should give a short horn.  If it is recessive, it may show at least a trace of shelf or sail.  Or at least, so one would think.

This is probably the most significant cross type we can make.  As a first guess we would tag the extreme flounced type as the SSSS, with the horned as SSSs or SSss with the spooned type SSSs--but I would be very surprised if it turns out to be this simple.  The F2 backcross to SA from the extreme cross (I think this is type 4), the ratios should be especially interesting.

I'm hoping that CORDOBA turns out to be a non-producer.  I do have DYNAMITE, but in three years, I have had one attempt at bloom, which froze, with two increases, one of which I gave my daughter in TN to see if she can get better growth, and mine got moved to as near full sun as I have.  No increase shows yet, so I'm not counting on much from it.  I don't have any of the others Mike mentioned.

The suggestion of asking Keppel is one I will follow up on.  Keith doesn't much like the SA's judging from some remarks he's made (I could be wrong), but has made a cross or two, and I see he lists at least one this year in his catalog.  With his breeding line, he has to have had some pop up in the seedlings, what with SPIRIT WORLD a parent of registration record of an SA "break" for Christopherson.  Keith's pattern of inbreeding would have surfaced SA's probably more than anyone else except perhaps for Joe Ghio.

Personally, I am smitten with a good flower that has class, whether it is SA or non-SA.  The photos I've seen of Sutton's RETURN OF INNOCENCE send me over the edge.  It is just plain exquisite, as is SOLAR FIRE, judging from the photos.  Those don't show the haft marks mentioned in the registration, so it may look different from another angle.  There are a few other Sutton intro's of which I especially like the looks.  If I can find it, I'll post a copy of a photo of HONEY SCOOP I saw yesterday.  It is a beauty!
