Do any Southern gardeners on this list have experience with growing pomegranates and how to minimize fruit splitting open just before time to harvest. The bushes were transplanted from 1 gallon containers 15 years ago and are 16 feet tall. Over the years we've tried regular flood irrigation (5 inch basins) at 2 week intervals and at one month intervals. Last year water was withheld at the beginning of the monsoons early in July and have not been watered since until this weekend. Last year's fruit set was good but the splitting problem in early October was the worst ever. Currently, there is lots of 1-1/2 to 3 inch fruit on the bushes.
