FYI-Not Southern, Northern California in fact. Hot Sacramento valley. We
seldom water our extremely prolific pomegranate. It also is about ten years
old and is about 15 feet tall and five wide. Loaded now with blossoms and
fruit forming. Have several planted from cuttings from this jewel of a
plant. Easy to propagate. Drought tolerant, small shiny dark green leaves,
bright red fruit. I love this easy care shrub. Ours is planted on a slope
and practically never gets watered. Maybe twice a season. Gophers seem to
leave it alone so far,(they are our biggest problem)
The reason for my response is to comment on the amount of water you are
giving your pomegranate. Beware..they don't want too much. The fruit
splitting is a natural condition for the fruit I think. Just a way to
determine ripeness. I never considered it a problem.
