Re: Garden Surprises

Hi Pam and everyone,
Garden surprises can be fun. This year I had lovely red petunias popping up
all over the veggie garden. At first I started transplanting them, but they
didn't take to that too well, so I have left the rest and have bits of
color among the green veggies.

People often say that tomato volunteers are never good, but I usually let
mine grow if I have the space available, at least until they produce their
first fruit, and then make a decision. I did rip two volunteers out this
year for lack of taste, but three of my tomato volunteers were among my
best tasting toms and healthiest plants this year: Sun Gold, Sweet
Millions, and Roma.

Also I had a couple of fennel (the veggie, not the herb) volunteers in the
garden this year. I've let one of them go to seed and it has produced
thousands of seed for next year.

Did anyone else have any fun and delicious garden surpises this year?

May all your weeds be edible,
Pat
