Hi Lynn,

   Generally, yes, fall color will be better if the plant receives more
   light and sufficient moisture.  However, cultivars like 'Mt. Airy'
   are almost always impressive regardless.  

   'Blue Mist' would probably be disappointing in shade, as would the
   straight species.

   To clarify my comments about Fothergilla, it *prefers* moist, well-
   drained acidic soils with a little bit of light, but it's pretty
   tough and can tolerate drought, clay soils, and shade pretty well.
   It just won't be effective as it would be in an 'ideal' siting.
