I have a book called "100 English Roses for American Gardens" published by
Smith and Hawken.
A 2 page spread on each rose with a good picture, several paragraphs of
info and a summary of such info as height in warm and cool climates,
fragrance and disease problems. I went thru and marked the resistant
varieties that I liked.
Then, one fine day, I came across a specimen of 'The Prince' in bloom.
Red/purple with a heavenly fragrance and fairly compact. It is considered
subject to mildew, black spot and rust. It is also growing near my patio :
). I'll keep you up to date as the summer progresses
Anyway, the book seems fairly good, at least in terms of photography and
the willingness to name that disease. There is also a list of mail order
suppliers and public gardens. The copyright is 1997 so I imagine this info
is fairly up to date.
