Japanese Maple

About a year and a half ago, I bought a fairly tall Japanese maple. We
planted in October and had a very cold January. There was a lot of dead
wood in the spring so I pruned back the dead and left it alone. This year
I have a lot of growth about 1 foot off the ground. Higher up on the tree
there is V in the trunk with a little growth there - nothing significant.
How should I prune this? Cut is at one foot? Get rid of all the growth at
the one foot level and direct the growth to the top of the tree? Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks

Margot
