Tree-fern query from Hawaii

Hello all,

I have just received a query from Hawaii that I can not at this moment give an 
answer to.

The writer has found a new large volunteer fern in his garden and it looks like 
a tree fern. Of course, it may not meet the accepted criteria of tree fern. His 
letter and pictures can be seen by following the link below.


While I have come up with some ideas, I am not at all confident that I have 
the correct answer.
