My mistake! Sounds like you've been through the mill, Daryl. That's a lot of cats. Bless you for caring for them. T12 collapsed when I was carrying a tray of tomato seedlings and went to put them back on the shelf after watering. I had kyphoplasty to repair that, and the vertebrae above and below broke shortly thereafter. L2 went about a month after that. Severe osteoporosis was the diagnosis. The cause? Who knows, though the steroid injections I had been getting for a few years for severe back pain were probably part of it even though the doctors spaced them out considerably. Moral to that story - get a DEXA scan once you reach a certain age, even if you are exercising and eating a good diet. Side note - get a Shingles vaccination, too. You don't want what I've been battling since the 4th of July. We may be getting closer to a start date for the repairs. The contractor will be pulling permits on Tuesday. Unfortunately, by Tuesday night and into the rest of the week, we may be getting tropical storm remnants. They often kick up high winds and heavy rains, and sometimes (oh, joy!) tornadoes. It's been difficult to find a contractor because not only are some rafters broken, but also the main beam of the house. If it was just the roof, it would have been done long ago. We're still living in the house because of the animals. There's no place that would rent to a pride of cats and they're stressed out enough from having their house upset anyway. I sleep on a too-short couch and my husband on a recliner. We always have a number of cats on top of or around us as it is. Poor cats. They were all strays or dumped during the recession when people were giving up their houses and didn't take their pets. We rehomed 16 and several had to be euthanized or died because of FIV or coyote damage, and some just disappeared (probably coyotes), but we still ended up with a dozen in the house. In case anyone is curious, the photo is of the base of the tree that fell. Yes, that's a yardstick and as you can see, it's even wider than a yard in the opposite direction. I miss it. d > On October 7, 2018 at 11:36 AM Kitty Morrissy <1018@rewrite.hort.net> wrote: > > > Daryl, that's horrible. How did your ribs get broken? The bed is gone, along with bedding, books, rug and all sorts of things. The ceiling came mostly down because of the damage and volume of water (partly on me), as did some broken rafters that miraculously missed one of our cats who likes to sleep between us. I had awakened my husband just in time for him to be on his way down the hall to comfort the other cats while I tried to find my glasses. I move very slowly these days because I had 4 broken vertebrae this spring and summer. But none of the cats were injured, nor were we. God is good! > > We are without use of the master bedroom and bath, and there are only a blue tarp and a thin sheet of clear plastic between the room and the sky, and they also had to rip up the tile floor in the bathroom and take out quite a bit of the wallboard that was wet and or damaged. > > The tree that fell was a healthy, 100' + tall tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera). Nothing like a small tornado at 5:50 AM. :-( Fortunately, pain had awakened me and when I heard a weird noise I grabbed my tablet which had a tab opened to the local radar feed. I've rarely seen such a blob of red coming at us like that. > > I, too hope that it can get done soon.
