GWA regional meeting


Garden Writers and others:

Region III will have a meeting March 14 in 
Indianapolis in conjunction with the Indiana 
Flower & Patio Show.

We will have a panel discussion on the Emerald 
Ash Borer, which is on the march throughout the 
Midwest and has the potential of killing ash 
trees throughout the country.

Anyone interested in attending, please let me 
know. A flyer should be in the mail soon.

Attendees need to meet at the North end of the 
West Pavilion. GWA registration, meeting, panel 
and lunch will be in Hall D, which is adjacent to 
the West Pavilion.


8 a.m.		Early bird tour (Free, special 
registration required. See below.)
		Take a sneak peek of the 48th 
annual Indiana Flower & Patio Show before the GWA 
meeting with Donell Heberer Walton, director of 
the show. The show's theme: Symphony of Color, 
with 450 exhibitors, 30	garden landscapers all on 
more than 269,000 sq. ft.

9 a.m.		Seminar registration, continental breakfast, restroom break

10 a.m.	Welcome, introductions. GWA business.
	   	Show backgrounder and what's new 
(American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) is 
endorsing the show. Six to 10 designers will be 
featured in each garden.)

10:30 a.m.	Emerald Ash Borer - The Ash Tree Plague of the 21st Century.
Panel presentation about the emerald ash borer, 
which has been detected in Indiana, Michigan and 
Ohio. What are the states and federal government 
doing? What is the green industry doing?  What do 
consumer need to know about their ash trees and 
this insect? What is the latest research in 
biological and insecticidal controls?
* Bob Waltz, Indiana state entomologist
* Jodie Ellis, Purdue University entomologist and 
emerald ash borer coordinator for Indiana
* Jud Scott, president-elect of the American 
Consulting Arborist Association, owner of Vine & 
Branch Inc., tree care and landscaping.

11:45 a.m.	Panel ends. Break

Noon		Lunch and raffle

1 p.m.		Story meeting/tours.
		* Meet with the landscapers and 
designers about their gardens to learn about new 
trends, themes or other ideas. (One landscaper 
will have a chocolate garden, featuring 
"chocolate" plants and a real chocolate fountain.)
		* Talk to an AIFD person about 
the designs in the gardens and how that 
translates to the everyday gardener among your 
audiences.

4 p.m.		OPTIONAL Indianapolis Museum of 
Art -- update on multi-million landscape 
renovations: the process, the plants and new 
techniques. (Free, special registration required. 
See below.)
