Re: [GWL]: Editors making writers look foolish

Galleys? What a quaint suggestion!! Sorry Doreen, but I haven't seen 
a galley in years and years. These days The Garden scrupulously sends 
out page proofs (having emailed queries in advance), most other 
magazines will call or email with occasional queries, most (including 
my newspaper) edit and print the page without sending galleys, proofs 
or anything. And even The Garden does not send a second proof 
incorporating revisions.

This is how some British mags are able to run on staffs small enough 
to get by on national circulations of 50,000 in a terrible 
advertising market. The Kitchen Garden, a superb monthly, is run on 
an editorial staff of two and a half, plus (I think) a half time 
secretary and a part time designer.

I have taken the matter up with Gardens Illustrated (says he 
politely)... we shall see.
