Graham,
you've touched on a concept that I've tried, mostly without success, to 
articulate. This country was founded, not that long ago from an Old World 
viewpoint, by people who weren't satisfied with things in, say, England. They came, 
they saw, they conqured -- quite ruthlessly, when necessary. 
Some of that feisty DNA still sloshes around in the gene pool, despite 
Peter's dark pronouncements on our slacker zeitgeist. And even mild-mannered 
gardeners are apt to believe that furriners can damn well learn OUR language, not 
expect us to learn theirs. Universality is not universally appreciated.
Okay, that's two or three concepts... maybe that's my problem.
