Advertising pays the freight and determines the size of the news hole. If it weren't for the drug companies many mags and newspapers would be out of business. That said, Real Simple has done very well with its short article format. Young readers don't care about the philosophy of a carrot. They just want to grow it. Bulleted incomplete sentences suffice. Yet, they do love those photos.
