Jeff, my husband Don has already warned me about tax issues. He'd rather I not have a corporation, and continue to file taxes the way we do now.
My CPA dad took me aside last week and told me that it is time to incorporate. His concern is liability as I am collaborating with some other folks on various projects. A corporation puts the risk on the corporation and not on my personal assets. It is more paperwork but, according to him, a good idea for maturing businesses. It does cost some money so if I were you, I'd take your mother up on her offer.
Since there's already been some hints here I'd like to hear what lap tops work for all of you. Also, camera experience. In the past I've had a digital Olympus Camedia that was fine for point and shoot. Right now I have a wonderful collection of Nikor lenses and was hoping to get the D70 Digital Nikon camera so I could continue to utilize those lenses.
I too have had a Camedia and loved what it allowed me to do. I just upgraded to a Canon Rebel (we had lenses to fit it) and am trying to find my way through the new technology. It is far larger than the Olympus but takes me from 2.2 MP to 6 MP which is important at this stage of the game.
I also work on Macs and though I've tried all the other systems, I'd never, ever buy anything else. My desktop is a G4 Cube (no longer available) with a flat panel monitor (mandatory!) and I have an ibook that I purchased last year. I bought the smallest I book I could find as I wanted it to be portable.
My husband works on a Titanium laptop that he takes between work and home. At work, he plugs in a keyboard and mouse. At home, he works in a corner of the living room where there is an ethernet connection to our household router. My computer acts as the server.
Between us, we have an ibook, two Titaniums, a G4 laptop, the G4 Cube and an IMac (the kids use that one).
The big issues I deal with are 1) cataloging images and 2) now that I am taking larger photos, storing the images without having to constantly burn DVDs. I find that if I try to store images on a DVD (or a CD), I tend to file them away and never look at them again.
