Re: Fw: black widows & copperhead snakes (in great number in NCthis season)
Thanks for pointing that out, Tanya, as yes, this was in California.
Nonetheless, we do apparently have related species to the Brown Recluse:
"Spider experts across the state agree that the true brown recluse spider
does NOT live in California, but is native to Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and
Mississippi. There are some related species found in California. The
Loxosceles laeta, imported from South America, has been found in eastern Los
Angeles County. The Loxosceles deserta is found in the Mojave and Sonoran
deserts, the foothills of the Central Valley up to Merced and Fresno
counties, but not in Northern California." And, I'd add, perhaps in San
Luis Obispo County as well.
I'm one who has been bitten by a great many things; I spend a lot of time
camping in deserts, mountains, rockhounding in some very odd snake,
scorpion, spider type places; I sometimes spend the night in motels that
cost $20 or less per night...I'm not fussy or in the least bit paranoid
about such things, but when my wife got bit like that in our own bedroom, it
did trigger something and I no longer want spiders inside the house.
I'm a bit jealous of those who live in places like Florida where they have
geckos that hang out on the walls....eating any spider they encounter no
doubt.
My son once was bitten by an assassin bug, a kissing bug that he'd picked
up and was going to feed to a pet lizard... and the effect was immediate and
scary, shock, rash, chills, fever.
Nonetheless...I must point out that a great many people hire companies to
come around once a month and spray (various types of chemical poisons) for
spiders...and I am positive that in 99.9% of these cases, the cure is worse
than the illness.
