You might also have to put hardware cloth with very tiny holes around your
garden if you don't want snakes there.  Six months ago a copperhead got
inside my fenced in guinea cage and swallowed a live guinea about 6 weeks
old.  Now we put smaller holes hardware around the new cage that is 3 feet
off the ground.

My Great Danes have been bitten by a copperheads.  "They say" dogs survive
these bites ... "unless" there is bacteria on the fangs ... the poison in
the fangs just makes them swell up a bit, but it goes away ... except the
one time years ago Goliath, Sr. was bit by THE one with bacteria.  He nearly
died before we finally took him to the vet just in the nick of time!  After
that HE killed snakes! (and skunks! Yuk!!!)
