The reason for both problems is WATER. Many varieties of tomatoes crack when they are unevenly watered. Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes are particuarly notorious for this. Mulching and watering evenly will help if you can do it. Personally, I'm a community gardener so I just tolerate the cracks. The good news is that they're perfectly edible that way! If you like small tomatoes you might want to try a variety called Sweet Chelsea. They're a little larger than Sweet 100s, but they don't crack and they are delicious. Cucumbers need TONS of water. They are water based vegetables, and if they don't get it, they go bitter. With the semi-drought we've had here in Northern Va, mine not only went bitter, the vines dried up! Next year I'm going to try planting mine in a barrel in my back yard where I can water them every day! Lisa (Whose family is lucky to get any cherry tomatoes as I scarf most of them in the garden or on my way home from the garden!)
