Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Charlie,
I'm sorry to hear about your potatoes. Don't get discouraged
because they are truely satisfying to grow and harvest (and eat). I read
in a gardening book by Swain (Practical Gardening) that when he tried the
leaf or hay method he found that animals ate all his potatoes because they
were so easy to get to. I used the trench method this spring and was very
happy with the potatoes and the yield (I just harvested 5 pounds from two
plants). I used fully composted compost to back-fill. I like that method
so far because then I can just work the compost into the soil after
harvest. Depending on the area, you may be able to start another round of
potatoes this summer for fall harvest. Nurseries probable don't have seed
potatoes, but you could get some from Milk Ranch Seed Potatoes at
http://www.montrose.net/users/cdrockey/Index.htm or use organically grown
potatoes from the store (these are usually not treated with Auxins to
inhibit "eye" growth). If you can't get them in this summer, plant some
this fall to overwinter and harvest in the spring. I hope this helps some.
Neil
