Re:Re:Re: A few questions. Was : Alive?-

A former corn is not always good. It depends on what they used
for fertilizer or any herbicides. Some ar persistent for several
years. One particularly nasty one in use these days is clopyralid.
It is used on lawns and farm fields. With a 3 year persistence it is
wrecking the commercial compost business. I don't use other
peoples clippings because I don't know what they put on it.
Manure can be bad because of worming medicines in the case of
horse or field fly stuff in the case of cows. My neighbor who has a
half dozen beef cattle uses nothing I am sure but I get curious
when I see no maggots in the manure. I get all the free dung I am
ambitious enough to hall and he gets the door yard cleared. I don't
do the whole barn as it is to much for my ancient bones to haul. I
hope when he gets the loader this year that he will bring one load
down to me.
You can get a good jump on the corn season with a simple cold
frame just a little bigger than the bed with some old windows as a
cover. You need to watch out though for warm days or you cook
the plants. I am planning to build a frame one foot high and maybe
get a bigger jump on the season using a small candle on really
cold nights. Corn can be transplanted but does not like to be.
