I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Last year I used plastic for my
squash and cut a hole in the plastic for the squash plants using a bulb
planter. Worked great. When I watered the plants, or it rained, the water
would run towards the opening where the plants were and intensified the
watering in that area. Last year was no problem, but I am concerned about
what would happen on a particlarly wet year...
