Re: Raised bed side height

My raised beds (built this year) are 10 inches high.
Just turning over the soil (to a depth of 2 feet in clay...)
raised the soil by 7-8 inches. By the time I added
30 gallons (one trash can) of composte (curtesy of
the city of Lincoln Ne) One bag of peat (2.2 sq feet)
and a number of pails of vermiculite, I was right at the
top of my forms.
As far as your question goes. Will you just be turning the
soil over to a depth of 1 foot. Six inch sides would be
enough, but if you plan on ammending the soil... or
digging deeper I would recomend at least 10 inches,
I am thinking of adding another 3-4 inches to the sides
next fall.
One note though. I turned the soil over to a depth of
two feet, I have later read (here) that while you should dig
that deep, you should also leave the bottom foot of soil
still on the bottom. (I didn't do that).
I also did not screen my dirt or compost. I found myself
manually breaking up clumps (where possible) when
I was planting, and pulling out roots and braches from
the city compost I added. I will be screening my garden
next spring. I would recommend doing it the first time
if you could.
My raised beds are high enough, that I do my gardening
sitting on an overturned drywall bucket. Works great!
