My friend sent a picture of the iris they have growing in their bush.  It looks like I versicolor to me, although it's not a great photo.

I sent these pictures off to a friend who can't go visiting gardens anymore (the one w the lavender strip).  Her husband told her they're growing wild in their bush, plus along Trans Canada highway, near Falcon Lake.  I'll try to find out more information, especially if they're still blooming.
 
He might be thinking of I versicolor though, which I've seen growing out that way.

Here's a set of somewhat better pictures, of a fresh flower from the spuria accidentally mixed in with the white species spuria.  The stem got totally broken off in last night's storm, so it's been in the house overnight while I waited for the last bud to open.
 
What a difference between the older flower and this freshly opened one.
