RE: I. tectorum


 

I'm thinking I need to pull a piece off that cristata if it makes it through this winter, just to have a backup.  I think it had 7 increases last time I checked it.  I do have backups for most of my bearded iris, but the more borderline ones, like the AB's, don't seem to increase enough to do that, before their untimely demise, alas.
 
I have a replacement for AB Oyez in the house too for the winter.  It hasn't done much since I potted it up in August, but at least it's still green although the 1 fan is still only about 1" tall.

El and all,

It was I. cristata that survived here a few
years in zone 3, not I. tectorum.

In the photo Rodney sent the flower looked
similar to an I. cristata I used to grow and I
confused them. Sorry.

I don't think the I. cristata I got as a plant
bloomed until the third year here, and didn't
increase to two plants until the fourth or fifth
year. Then it died out in the next year or two.
It was in a place where snow accumulated and
stayed all winter.
