El,
how long has the species-X category existed? maybe it was not
available for registration in 2002. This would explain a few
things.

Forgive me for saying this was clever marketing for Paul, much
like Ben Hager was clever at marketing his iris.
I recall some talk on iris-photos that the smaller TB's and even
MTB's no longer really fit in their class. So, the time is right
for changes.
Change is always slow, even when it's necessary and required.
Hopefully, we can all work towards that, in a positive way.

Dennis,
now you're being silly! Such a hybrid can never compete in
a TB class and the TB enthusiasts would simply comment,
'pretty for such a primitive thing!' and then turn to the
next ruffled dinner plate and ooh and ahh. I understand you
wanting a truly acknowledged primitve/species bred
category, but we don't seem to have one in the AIS, or do
you have special show categories in the States for such
hybrids? The few shows I visit always disappoint me in the
lack of acknowledgment less that 'current fashion' works
receive. I think we are all in agreement, here, otherwise
most of us wouldn't be SIGNA members. I would prefer to see
truly groundbreaking work being shown and awarded, but I
don't find pushing cultivars such as Dolce into no mans land
appropriate. This is, also, not fair (but then, life is not
fair, now, is it?) If we must have awards, I would prefer
to see more sub-categories noted, defined and awarded. I
tried this with Hemerocallis in Europe, but few
gardeners/hybridizers seem to be interested. They prefer
jumping onto the already rolling band wagon and btchn about
the rules, instead of thinking outside of the envelope.
This was a lesson to me; you can give a gardener fertilizer,
but you can't make him spread it about or people don't mind
change, as long as everything stay the same. (mixed
metaphor?)

PS: do stick to your definition, I don't want to sway you.
It is important that such views are considered and someone
carries their torch.
