Sandra... I've had a few like this this year also. I too thought it
was a strong dose of leaf spot, and then realized that the entire leaf was
rotting at the base upwards to about 3", like you say. There are two
kinds of rot, one in the rhizome, and one that affects the leaves, called
crown rot, so this may be it. Unfortunately, I didn't do anything other
than spray for leaf spot because 1)it was still raining when I discovered
them a month ago, and 2) I didn't know what else to do. Now we've got warm
weather, and the ground has dried up and I now have to water the iris. I've
trimmed out a lot of the rotted leaves, and some of the plants are still
growing, and some fans rotted entirely. The books say to apply a
systemic fungicide, but that the rot sclerotia may remain in the soil for
years.
