Re: AIS: Judge's Training

I served a number of years as Exibition and Garden Judge both, and I
must admit I much preferred the duties in the garden. Evaluating an
iris in situ, growing, exibiting character and vigor in the garden
(or lack of it), was much more interesting and served my own
interests in development of TB's much more than whatever might happen
on the show bench.

I did enjoy judging shows, but in the decades since I served the
Handbook has changed and expectations seem much more rigorous,
perhaps quite rightly so. The task now is one I would rather avoid,
and gives me pause in thinking whether I want to serve again. If I
were certified only for Garden, I'd love it. But I do realize the
shortage of people willing to judge shows makes a difference.
Sometimes we need to do things because others need us, not because we
want to or don't want to (and I'm not aiming this at you, Linda. I'm
talking to myself as much as anyone).
