Stopping down the lens to increase the "Depth of Field" will indeed increase
the near to far
range of focus.  However, sharpness at the minimum aperature size will fall
off as light
is diffused around the aperture blades, thus reducing the true sharpness of
the image.
The most import issue is, as you say"to KNOW 100% about what
your camera can do with any lens/film combo."  But remember to combine this
with "what you are trying to say with the photograph".
