Re: CULT: Discouraging Cats

I'm truly sorry my tactics were found offensive. And no, I'm not a
professional marksman but having been brought up hunting squirrels and
rabbits (for food), I am a darn good shot. When I use the BB gun I pop them
on the rump, which is at the opposite end . . no eyes in that area. I have
had stray cats, almost always unneutered males, spray around the outside of
my house, crap in my yard, flower beds, and vegetable beds and attack my
(now deceased) old neutered cat, Algernon, in broad daylight. Those attacks
cost him a lot of pain and infections and cost me expensive vet bills and a
lot of time cleaning and flushing drains put in his wounds.
I don't see me as the bad guy in this scenario. My animals are well
cared for. They have all their shots, are house pets and my companions and
are altered. They are also kept in MY yard. In this area (and I dare not go
into that 'cause I would offend someone else), people don't neuter their
male animals. . there are few female dogs/cats - too expensive to spay and
since males don't come in heat, the animal population is 85% male and it
seems like most of them are cats. These cats are not cared for. They are
mangy, ratty looking animals and most of them are not socialized and I doubt
very much that they have received any shots, including rabies. I don't solve
the big problem; all I do is run them out of my yard and away from my
animals.
In this area, the laws are frequently disregarded and some turn their
dogs loose AT NIGHT. If my front gate is left open, I can look forward to
several piles of dog poop in my front yard in the morning from these night
roamers. The Humane Society is sorely understaffed and suffers from an acute
lack of funds and from my observation, some of the staff is there because
they can't get hired on elsewhere. The rest seem to be dedicated and care
about their charges.
I understand how some could be offended by my use of a BB gun, but
before I am judged as being cruel, mentally walk in my shoes for a moment.
