Sorry if you are offended; personally I would like to be a judge and
think I would be a good one. I do not mean to demean anybody's work; I only
point out that to become a judge it is required to have opportunities that
are not available to everyone I do not have the money or time off work to
travel to conventions; maybe once in 3-4 years. I am married, and my wife
is not into iris as much as I am, so if we can only take one vacation every
other year it wouldn't be fair to her to always make it an iris convention.
Even if some club 100 miles away offered a judge's training at an evening
meeting (they usually don't), I'd have to miss half a day's work to get
there in southern California traffic; and I'd get home about 3 hours before
I got up to go to work. Of course, I couldn't do it unless my wife took the
day off work, because someone would have to pick up my daughter at
preschool. I could attend a judge's training on a Sunday or on some
Saturday's (I never hear of any around here), although we try to make
Saturday our "family" day whenever possible; and trying to maintain my iris
beds takes about 10 hours a week, and the plantar fasciitis in my foot
flares up and keeps me from going out at all about half the time, so I keep
falling behind in the yard work and feeling guilty because my 4-year old
sweetheart of a daughter deserves to have her daddy take her to
Disneyland.....
Well, it's kinda obvious why most of the judges I know do not have
young children, and many are retired. I'm not trying to complain about my
life, simply pointing out that the available time and money for travel are
limited, and without sufficient local opportunities for judge's training, I
would need more of both.
