That is truly a distressing sight!  I have never had TBs heave, only medians
and I remember seeing a few like this.  Now I place a small rock on top of
them to keep them in the ground over the winter.  This has worked for me so
far.....I'll do it again this year and hope for the best.  Despite all the
talk about potting I decided I'm way too lazy to do this.  I spent my morning
planting my rhizomes directly into the garden.  So if I lose anything I'll be
kicking myself for not taking the extra step.
