Re: CULT: rain and death (was Changing Seasons)

Heavy rain (2 to 3 inches in 24 hrs) or prolonged rainy spells (a week
with half an inch per day) during heat of summer (mid to upper 90s),
<especially> following a month long <hot, dry> spell is death for some
cultivars here. In the past, that has been especially true for some
Blyth cultivars I've tried (not to pick on B - true for selections from
many other hybridizers selecting in dry summer climates).

Some catalogs say in their cultural directions "avoid overhead watering,
especially during warm weather" (!) That's a warning to me that their
selections may not do very well here.

<Yes, we can get very heavy rains at this time of year in the
southeastern area of the province. It mainly comes in August
here, but these rains usually only seem to cause leaf spot not
rot. My main problems with rot occurs in the spring. Sandra

Or maybe you can find out if anybody else in your general area has had
success with CHINESE TREASURE? Or maybe someone else knows how it does
in the zone of despair?

<As for the iris I have I shall have to rescue it first so it might be
a year or so before it blooms, but if I can find
out anyway to identify
it I will let you know.>
