Sue -- Up here in Fairfax County, we aren't allowed to dispatch them by the easiest means, so we have to either drive them away by placing repellents near their domiciles or by trapping them. I recently tried the best advertised repellent, and the groundhog (who had dug beneath my kitchen) dug right up through the area laced with the repellent, even though he had another exit available. So much for that! The next day, we set a cage trap baited with peanut butter, placed it within a couple of feet of his preferred entryway, and caught him immediately. These traps are available on the internet for as little as $39 and are simple to use. Considering the damage the critters cause and the apparent ineffectiveness of other methods, I feel the expense is worth it.
Google "groundhog traps for sale" and you'll see several advertisments. "Havahart" is a popular brand. Choose a trap about 30" long, 10" wide and 12" high, since some of the critters get pretty big. After you catch him/them, transport them at least 4 miles away, preferably across a stream. You shouldn't see them again.
I hope you enjoyed the harvest dinner as much as I did. FAIS always does things well. -- Griff

Since I hold many of my pots over, I'm pretty sure I've seen more sprouts in the fall. Can't seem to remember to check on them and they get lost in the forest! Bye spring it's hard to remember which pots had them. The seed are being kept in a more protected location. Anyone know when groundhogs hibernate? Is it constant? Griffin Crump ent: Friday, December 11, 2009 10:51 PM o: iris@hort.net ubject: HYB: sprouts Just finished planting seeds today -- 2 months later than usual. Imagine my urprise when, opening the winter frame (a mesh-topped enclosure open to the eather), I found two sprouts in a pot left over from a previous year. One as three leaves, the other two, and both are less than 3 inches tall, so I ust conclude that they have sprouted during the last couple of weeks. Never ad fall sprouts before. The pot was completely shaded, so I moved it to the pposite wall of the enclosure, where it will get winter sun and warmth eflected off the wooden wall, and gave it a light covering of pine straw. he low was 22 last night. It warmed up to 39 today.
