Hello Mary, and welcome.
Your countless clumps of purple irises will do fine whatever (almost) you do
to them. You are right that they probably need separating and rebedding to
get them to bloom well again. If the recipients of your other clumps planted
them, they will probably bloom well also.
I'm not sure where you live (it's good to put this in your postings), but
about a month after the normal bloom time is right for most bearded iris.
You can remove any dead leaves, but normally leave good green leaves until
they go naturally.
