John Jones , on more than ones occasion , has posted more specific information about copyrights on these lists.

I am one of those guilty of copyright infringemement. I freely hybridize iris without the written permission of their creators who possibly have copyright interests.

Ahhh, Michael, but that is not copyright infringement. Plants (Roses for example) are patented not copyrighted. To my knowledge only one iris has ever been patented (or patent applied for) and I can't remember its name. There may be more, I am not sure, but the majority by far are not. It is just too expensive. Now when I stumble across the fire engine red iris from one of my random crosses, I will patent that !!!

The name of the iris (as any other creative work) has an implied copyright. (No, I am not implying that hybridizing a new iris is not a creative process, but it does not fit the definition for copyright protection)
