Liz:
Without knowing exactly where you live, I will offer
these guarded opinions...
The Gleditsia, although beautiful, is not a "narrow
small-growing tree". And it's brittle in windy areas
and messy.
Although I absolutely love Hymenosporum, I never see
two trees that look alike and it's rare to see even
one that has a good shape (aside from those that
someone has paid regular attention to; not expected
under city conditions).
The Callistemon viminalis is a nice tree but, again,
somewhat messy.
Here's my personal selections for street trees...
Acer capillipes, Snake-bark Maple (maybe too broad)
Castaniopsis cuspidata, Copper False Chestnut
Celtis sinensis, Chinese Hackberry
Daphniphyllum macropodum, Yuzuri-Ha Tree
Fraxinus oxycarpa 'Raywood, Raywood Ash
Ginkgo biloba 'Princeton Sentry', Ginkgo
Metrosideros tomentosa, New Zealand Christmas Tree
Pasania edulis, Japanese False Oak
Pistacia chinensis, Chinese Pistache
Quercus suber, Cork Oak
Tristaniopsis laurina 'Elegans’, Water Gum
I'd like to hear others opinions about these trees
under their conditions.
