My wife and I bought a fourplex seven years ago. I scared the
city when I removed almost every bit of vegetation from the lot. They
were Junk, not even Junque (this is junk with a few redeeming
qualities.)
I replaced them (to the city's relief) with nine blooming
trees all of which I'm pleased with. Several are in bloom right now.
Only the Calodendrum hasn't bloomed yet but it will. They are:
2 Bauhinia blakeana The Orchid Tree red/magenta flowers
Bauhinia forficata white flowers
Stenocarpus sinuatus Australian Firewheel Tree red flowers
Prunus sp Be very careful here. Get a known
hybrid with multiple flowers. And preferably, buy it only if it is in
bloom so you can see what you're getting. There are many variations
and some are not so hot! (in my opinion) Get one that won't drop
Fruit!@!!
Chionanthus retusa The Chinese White Fringe Tree I
like this one. it will get up to thirty feet high here and a mass of
white in April!
Calodendrun capensis The Cape Chestnut A full round tree
with compact candelabra blooms and will probably be less than 20 feet
tall. I would recommend this one highly.
Robinia idahoensis A locust? I like this one too it is
just beginning to bloom. It seems to be growing rapidly and I think
it will be a "medium" sized tree. It has cascades of magenta pea
shaped flowers. My only problem so far is a narrow crotch that is
starting to split. Pruning would probably have prevented this if I
had been sufficiently watchful. I'm putting a "boot" on it to prevent
further damage!
Tababuia chrysotricha The Golden Trumpet Tree. I have great
hopes for this tree although I think I'm just a wee bit too far north
for it. It's still alive but doesn't appear to be ecstatic about its
surroundings. If anyone has any hints, they would be most welcome.
I also have a freestone, white flesh nectarine that has
beautiful flowers, luscious fruit that would not be suitable as a
street tree but is a gorgeous addition to your back yard.
Many of these are pictured at my "Street Tree" page at:

Good luck and happy blooming! --_Chas---
