Just had to mention the great burst of spring bloom
that is all the more noticeable for the spate of warm
spring(and finally dry), weather we've been getting
this week here in northern California. The Ceanothus
and California poppies are incredible in their blue
and orange combinations, and the Oxalis pes capri are
pretty dazzling yellow highlights in their own right
now, (but I don't want them in my garden!).
It seems that blue, yellow and orange are some of the
predominant colors of spring here in California.
Other garden plants that aren't native but put on a
great show in my garden right now are:
Leucospermum cordifolium/Pincushion Protea-brilliant
orange
Iris confusa 'Chengdu'-floating clouds of blue orchid
like flowers, 50 to 75 flowers to a stem
Ipheion uniflorum/Spring Star Flower-masses of pale
blue flowers, and the Wisley Blue form is even
prettier with the deep violet color
Aloes of various species in full bloom-A. striata, A.
ferox, A. plicatilis, A. saponaria-all gorgeous at the
moment
Veltheimia bracteata-not really orange in color, more
of a pinkish apricot, but doing incredibly well this
spring for full bloom
Lots and lots of other things are also either still
blooming through winter, or also just getting started,
and to cap off, the Arbutus 'Marina'- a hybrid Madrone
is in full bloom right now, with the ripening fruit
also quite showy. I hope this ericaceous plant isn't
one of the species which becomes susceptible to the
new phytophera strain going around...
