Well, I have fought off the tree pollen allergies and planted some more shade
plants - I found that I could enlarge the bed under the one oak tree and maybe
double my little garden there. Planted some heuchera, shooting stars, lily of
the valley... My anemones lived over the winter and the spring blooming one is
gorgeous. In the shade of the house my hellebores and epimedium that I planted
very late last fall (read winter) all did wonderfully well and some are even
blooming. The last spot in that strip is occupied by a new fothergilla that I
planted this morning after last night's rain. Tulips I planted in the raised
bed didn't even come up, let alone bloom - I think a critter ate them. But a
star of Bethlehem has mysteriously come up from somewhere and made a nice
blooming clump. Out front in the hot sun by the mailbox the ajuga and
candytuft are covering large swaths in blue and white. The two clematis lived
over their second winter and are bigger, and I hope for great things this
year. The lilac and viburnum carlesi were also prolific but are now past. The
good smell now comes from the holly tree in front - the bees are having a ball.
Looking forward to a small trip next week to see Gene's garden and visit the
Cincinnati flower show. Ain't life great!
