Marie-- I had a hibiscus that sounds similar to yours that survived one 
of our winters but didn't survive last year's warm winter.  I didn't 
protect it and it came back after the first (normal) winter, but it was 
pretty puny.  This year I haven't seen it.  My big gripe with it was that 
the blooms were so fragile and quick.  I like more than a 2 day blooming 
period from my plants!!!  :)  Of course, if I had babied it maybe it 
would have done better the third year...
