The first thing to find out is if the problems are truly caused by nematodes.
This can be done one of two ways.
Soak some of the potentially infected leaves in some warm water for a few
hours and then look at the water with a 10x hand lens. If the leaves are
infected you should be able to see small clear worms at the bottom of the water.
Other wise have the leaves tested at your county extension office.
If you find out that you do have nematodes, one should clean up all leaves in
the area and burn them or bury them in the ground a foot deep. Do not add
the leaves to a compost pile, because the NetMedia can live in the compost for a
few years -- feeding off of fungi.
The best product to use for control on living plants is a product called
'Zero-tol'
I would use twice the recommended rate for "normal" use of Zero-tol and spray
the plants and the ground around the plants every few weeks in June and July.
Zero-tol is a great product that will also control fungi and algae. I use it
to clean off the leaves of my Phlox and Daylilies and Hosta. It does a very
good job of controlling mildew and other pathogens. I water almost every day
and in the past this has presented problems with mildew-but I have not had any
problems since using the product the last three years.
Its safe for the plants and the environment, with its active ingredient being
H2O2.
Application should be by spray and one should soak the leaves, both the tops
and the bottoms. Treat after every rain storm, those plants growing around
infected plants too.
The nemtods do not move around to much and as a general rule spread by leaf
contact from one plant to another. After it rains the nematodes use the water
film that covers the leaves to move from one leaf to the next.
