Hello Al,
    I have had pretty good luck with the Bletilla striata and alba form for
some years now in my garden. Both are in dry shade in well drained soil.
They do take a couple of years to settle in and produce like the photos. I
find they resent disturbance a bit. They are more hardy than generally
rated. Many on the Alpine list grow these in much of the temperate world.
All I ever do to mine is mulch with chopped leaves in the fall. They have
been through short periods of zone 4 weather without any problems.
    Don't give up on them. worth the effort.
