Hosta is one of those "backbone" plants in my book. They are so important
for helping to add structure and to add "sunrays" to dark corners of the
shady garden. They are so important in shady combinations, their leaf forms
(large, small, crinkled, smooth, variegated or not, etc.) add contrast and
texture.
One of my favorites at the moment is H. 'Kabitan' which has long, narrow,
lance-shaped yellow leaves with a wavy green margin. It grows to about 20
inches and blooms in July-August. H. 'Sum and Substance' is another
favorite, though it seemed to take a while to become established. It has
chartreuse, puckered leaves that are huge. Another good form for those dark
nooks.
I also have a teeny, weeny dark green leafed one with a white margin that I
have on top of a low stone wall. It's in a spot that is good for viewing.
Very delicate.
Guess I could add quite a few others, but those are my favs right now.
