Diana:

I have similar conditions at the back of my house:  clay soil, western
exposure.
It's also at the top of a hill and rain sometimes causes great runoff. 
Afternoons make for a hot, dry place in the summer.  
A couple of plants that have done good:
	Sumac
	Siberian iris
	Daffodil bulbs (particularly Div.3 and poets)
	Daylilies
	Great Solomon Seal 
	Black Eyed Susan
	
Linda Wallpe
Cincinnati
